About

I am a 23 year old Potter, Photographer and Children’s Librarian. I took a ceramics class for the first time at age six and have been playing around in the fancy dirt ever since! I have done ceramic sculpture in the past, but my current practice is primarily wheel thrown pottery.

I spent three semesters in college studying pottery and ceramic sculpture under two of the best teachers that I could have had the absolute luck to be instructed by, Blue Ridge master potters Donna Polseno and Richard Hensley. I am deeply indebted to the patience, kind words of encouragement and breadth of instruction that they have given me as I endeavored to improve my artistic practice in the last few years. I am also incredibly inspired by and indebted to the wonderful student potters that I worked alongside of in college: ER, AKM, AH, ET, SH, BI and MS, all of whom are incredible artists and women.

The pieces I featured on this blog are primarily all high fire (△10). I have fired work in gas, electric and raku kilns. I also have experience in making glazes and slips from raw ingredients. The glazes on these pieces were made up in our studio from raw material.

In addition to my ceramic practice I am a film photographer and you can find some of photography portfolio at margaretheppnerphotography.wordpress.com.
